World Oceans Day
8 June (international)
Celebrate Our Oceans! Although unofficially celebrated for years, the United Nations officially declared in 2009 that World Oceans Day would be held on June 8th each year.
Why do we need a day to celebrate our oceans? Because they are in trouble! For years, the sheer vastness of the oceans made us think that they could swallow up whatever we dished out. That is proving not to be the case. Find out about the current state of our oceans and how you can bring awareness this World Oceans Day 2011: http://www.squidoo.com/world-oceans-day.
The 2011 and 2012 theme for World Oceans Day is "Youth: The Next Wave for Change." Events will focus on getting youth involved.
The Seven C's for Ocean Conservation (summarised from the Ocean Project):
Commit to becoming carbon neutral.
Conserve by upgrading to energy saving appliances and compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Consume consciously by reducing, reusing, recycling, and purchasing "green" products.
Communicate about the impacts of climate change on the ocean.
Challenge yourself daily to cut your carbon emissions.
Connect by volunteering with a local watershed or ocean group.
Celebrate World Oceans Day.
