Workers Day
1 May (South Africa and international)
International Workers' Day commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in almost every country. Many countries around the world commemorate the contribution made by workers to society on May Day. In South Africa, it has traditionally been a day to protest for better wages and working conditions. Commemoration of this day in South Africa is significant considering the role played by the trade unions in the fight for freedom. From an environmental perspective, this day would also remind us to celebrate the fruits of our labours, and the vital role that healthy natural ecosystems play in supporting the production of healthy fresh produce.
