Climate Action
10/10 Global Work Party: 10 October
Rhodes University is organising a Green Fund Run on 10/10/10. 350.org/'s slogan for 2010 is "Get To Work." Using the 10th day of the 10th month of the millennium's 10th year as a starting point for the 10:10 campaign, 350.org's message is clear... let's take concrete ACTION: "Get to work to start changing our communities, and get to work to make our leaders realise that they actually need to lead".
Ideas for 10/10 include planting trees, installing solar panels or rainwater tanks, helping a school set up a food garden... the ideas are endless! To show commitment to taking concrete action, sign up at www.350.org/oct10
International Day of Climate Action: 24 October
Launched in 2009, the International Day of Climate Action was called "the most widespread day of political action in the planet's history". Rhodes University staff and students were also involved - Climate Action 2009. Across the world, the Copenhagen climate talks were called to come up with a fair, ambitious, and binding treaty. The Copenhagen climate talks are over, and many people are disappointed that more was not done. But the climate movement is growing with groups like 350.org/. Ideas for 2010 include:
International Day of Climate Action
- Regular Climate "Meetup": Hold monthly '350 community meetings' help build communities and keep efforts alive.
- Community Organising: Organize at a local level for local action to reduce carbon.
- Community Education: Increase awareness in your community, including at a political level.
- Take Aim at Coal: Resist coal mining and new power plants, support alternative sustainable energy options.
