Makana Botanical Gardens
The Makana Botanical Gardens - the pride of our community - is a collaborative effort between Rhodes University's Grounds and Gardens Section, the Dept of Environmental Affairs & Tourism, the National Botanical Institute, and Makana Municipalityis. It is the second oldestĀ botanical garden in South Africa and is home to a number of interesting exotic species representing its European history and is now also home to many local species. The garden is currently being redeveloped through a Rhodes initiative in partnership with Makana City, DEAT and SANBI which has resulted in a capital injection of more than R14,000,000 into local development.
