Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa
The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) is a membership-based organisation that promotes public participation in caring for the Earth. The Grahamstown branch falls under the WESSA Eastern Province Region, based in Port Elizabeth, and performs a local watchdog function, voicing concerns to the relevant authorities when necessary. They support several other local environmental initiatives, particularly the Friends of Thomas Baines Nature Reserve and the Friends of the Greater Fish River Reserve. In 1998, they published the Field Guide to the Eastern and Southern Cape Coasts. WESSA is currently working together with the Albany Branch of the Botanical Society to make the Ecca Nature Reserve more accessible to members of the public. They encourage member participation through a programme of monthly activities such as talks on environmental topics, and outings to places of interest in the surrounding country districts.
