Why teach? This begs the question of – why do anything? Of all the things we can do in this one short life we have, what really counts? Of course, there are no simple answers to this question, and the challenge is for each of us has to find and live out our own meaningful response.
Teaching is not for everyone, but for those who throw themselves into it for even a short time, it offers a taste of something bigger and richer than can be put into words. There can be few things more exciting – and terrifying – than stepping into young people’s lives and taking responsibility for influencing their world views, their purpose and their capacity to fulfil their callings. Teaching is not for those who can or can’t do something; it is for those who envisage a better future for our world and who want to be part of growing the people to make this a reality.
