FACULTY OF HUMANITIES POSTGRADUATE MASTERS & PHD RESEARCH FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
The Faculty of Humanities offers postgraduate students a competitive opportunity to allow full-time post graduate students to apply for research funding. This happens twice a year, once in the 1st semester and then again in the 2nd semester. Criteria for post graduate funding is as follows:
STUDENT CRITERIA
Aim and Purpose of Funding:
This initiative is designed to stimulate research in the faculty and to increase research outputs, with an emphasis on creative ideas for doing this. The specific purpose of the funding is to ensure that MA and PhD theses do not land up on library shelves but are published jointly by supervisors and candidates for dissemination to a wider audience.
The criteria for applications are as follows:
1. The funds should be used to support initiatives not covered by either the JRC or the DVC of Research’s Discretionary Fund.
2. Since the money is limited, the fund will concentrate on short-term projects which could lead directly to research outputs. The maximum award normally given will be R10 000.00.
3. Only group research projects involving supervisors and candidates for local research activities will be considered. Supervisors need to commit themselves to publishing jointly with their students.
4. The fund will be used for the following types of projects: writing breakaways, short group research trips, small research workshops in preparation of manuscripts (e.g. for an edited volume) and living expenses after the thesis has been completed. Allocation of the funds will be against measurable research outputs typically an article in an accredited journal. Please provide details on the plans for your research output.
5. Local conference attendance can be covered by this fund if it leads to a publication.
6. Applications will only be considered from postgraduate students who are in the final stages of their degrees.
7. Candidates must provide a coherent research motivation on the actual research activities to be undertaken and a detailed proposed budget on the expected expenditure for these.
8. Evidence of submission of at least one article must be provided no more than three months after the award.
9. All recipients must provide a one page report for the first Faculty Board meeting of the following year. The report should indicate how the funds were used what publications were produced, whether the student graduated and whether the goals were met.
10. The fund will not cover the costs of basic data collection nor tuition fees. It will also not cover printing/binding/publication or proof reading costs.
Please submit your application electronically to Karen Kouari, Faculty of Humanities: k.kouari@ru.ac.za
