FACULTY OF HUMANITIES DISCRETIONARY RESEARCH FUNDING

STAFF CRITERIA

1. The aim of the funds is to stimulate research in the faculty and to increase research outputs, with an emphasis on creative ideas for doing this.
2. Allocation of the funds will be against measurable research outputs (typically an article in an accredited journal).
3. The committee will attempt to ensure that the funds are equitably distributed across the faculty.
4. All recipients must provide a one page report for the first Faculty Board meeting of the following year. The report should indicate how the funds were used and whether the goals were met.
5. The maximum award is R10 000.
6. Applications must be submitted to the Dean’s office one week prior to the first Tuesday of every month, when the committee will meet to consider applications.
7. The funds should be used to support initiatives not covered by either the JRC or the DVC for Research’s Discretionary Fund.
8. Since the money is limited, the fund will concentrate on short-term projects which could lead directly to research outputs.
9. The overwhelming emphasis will be on group research projects. Individual applications will be considered only under exceptional circumstances. Special attention will be paid to groups comprising supervisors and candidates.
10. The fund will be used for the following types of projects: writing breakaways, short group research trips, small research workshops in preparation of manuscripts (e.g. for an edited volume) and so on. The committee will also consider well-motivated applications to allow staff in the faculty to complete their higher degrees.
11. Conference attendance, sabbatical grants, equipment and other routine research expenditure will not be covered by this fund. Individual students will also not be covered by this fund.
