Automotive Industry

Over the last eight years the Ergonomics Unit has developed a close association with the automotive industry. This association has lead to several large, ongoing research projects with various automotive companies.

The in situ analysis of working conditions later simulated in the laboratory for in-depth scientific investigation.

Laboratory simulation of lifting vehicle doors out of their transport crates using sophisticated equipment to assess spinal kinematics and estimate forces on the lower back.

The use of the Lumbar Motion Monitor to evaluate spinal kinematics during the placement of a vehicle door on a push-pull trolley. This provides important information pertaining to velocity, acceleration and displacement on spinal movement. The push-pull trolley was used to reduce the musculo-skeletal strain by eliminating the carrying component of this task.
