Tracking Memories 2009
The First Physical Theatre Company was officially launched at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in July 1993. Based at the Rhodes University Drama Department, Grahamstown, South Africa, First Physical is committed to a theatre of transformation and collaboration. Primarily First Physical focuses on an holistic theatre experience drawing together fact, fiction, movement, mime, text, song, dance and design. At the core of the company is its commitment to performance and the repertory experience. The company also has as its focal point the development of the individual choreographic signatures of those associated with the company, as well as, a strong commitment to education and development. The First Physical Theatre Company developed in order to provide graduates the opportunity to experience the professional world of theatre and to interact with both experienced and less experienced choreographers and theatre makers. This process demands performers and collaborators to be versatile and critical theatre makers. Performers need to display certain proficiency and ability in technical training, vocal performance, choreography, research, teaching, conceptualising theatre, design. In this sense the performer at the First Physical Theatre Company is a holistically trained entity, encouraged to grow and explore different avenues that can contribute to the Total Theatre experience envisaged by the First Physical Theatre Company and its collaborators.
