Modules to be offered in Exploration/Economic Geology 2013
4th February to 6th March 2013: Module 1 – Exploration Techniques
Seminars, lectures and practicals on: Ore microscopy; Earth, plate tectonics and ore formation; Structural geology for mineral exploration; Geological mapping; Geochemistry; Remote sensing for mineral exploration; GIS for mineral exploration; Geophysics – (Gravity, Aero- & ground magnetic, EM, IP, Seismic, Radiogenic, etc); SABLE-Data management for exploration and mining geology; Drilling; Exploration modes: Bushveld Complex, International cases. There is no field trip component for this module.
25th March – 4th May 2013: Module 2 – Magmatic Ore deposits
Seminars, lectures and practicals on: Magmatism and ore forming system; Mafic magmatism and mineralization: Cr-PGE, Cu-Ni-PGE deposits, V-Ti-magnetite deposits, Ni-Cu deposits; Alkaline magmatism and mineralization: Carbonatite: Cu-P-vermiculite-REE-magnetite deposits; Acidic magmatism and mineralization; Porphyry Cu-Au-Mo; Kimberlites. Field trip to Kimberley, Northern Bushveld limb(Platreef), Phalaborwa carbonatites, East Bushveld-Stratigraphic sequences (UG1 -= 3, Merensky Reef), Zaaiplaats Sn deposit, Nkomati Ni deposit, Insziwa intrusion and Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization (+/- 2 weeks).
27th May – 5th July 2013: Module 3 – Hydrothermal and sedimentary ore deposits
Seminars, lectures and practicals on: Hydrothermal Au-Ag deposits; Archaean Au-lode deposits; Volcanogenic massive (VMS) and SEDEX sulfide deposits; Mississippi-Valley-type deposits (MVT); Au-U deposits in the Witwatersrand Basin; Stratiform and stratabound Cu-Co deposits in the Zambian-Congo Copperbelt; Olympic Dam Cu-Au-U deposits; Sedimentary iron ore deposits; Sedimentary manganese deposits; Coal deposits; Petroleum and natural gas; Uranium (sedimentary and magmatic); Beach heavy mineral sands; Placer diamonds; Marine diamonds. Field trip to Iron ore fields, Manganese fields, Alluvial diamonds, Goldridge Mine, Areachap Zn-Cu mine, Aggeneys Pb-Zn mine, Okiep Copper district, Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Cu mine (+/- 2 weeks).
29th July – 2nd August 2013: Module 4 – Project management and mineral economics
Seminars, lectures and practicals on: Sampling and analytical work, Project target initiation: (Technical, financial and administrative analysis), Political systems: (Mineral rights and its management requirement, local community relationships), Project Operation: SHEC; Data acquisition and management: (technique, expenditure, contract, quality, confidentiality, security, storage, utilization); AQ/AC; Mineral resource reporting codes; Environmental requirements and protection; Feasibility study; Financial evaluation of mineral deposits, DataMine: (ore body modelling, geostatistics, mineral reserves/resources, mining design). There is no field trip component for this module.
