Workshops 2013
Upcoming Workshop for delegates
The MSc programme 2013, comprising 4 modules of teaching courses and two field trips, will commence at Rhodes University in early February and run to the end of August 2013. This well-established programme has been primarily designed for geological post-graduate students, practicing industry candidates and geoscientists, and it has been running over the 34 years since 1978. Although the programme was run part-time during the last two years under the late Prof. J. Moore’s leadership, the programme was restarted and continues to thrive under the Directorship of Prof. Yong Yao since 2012.
The first module, Exploration Techniques, includes courses in Structural Geology, Exploration Geophysics, Exploration Geochemistry, Remote Sensing and GIS, and Drilling Techniques. The individual courses are run by prominent experienced university and industry experts, and will be held from 04 February to 06 March 2013 (See Table below).
Courses are generally structured in the form of a morning teaching section and an afternoon practical activity, within a one week time period. The courses cover the theoretical basis, working methodology, computer-based software operation, industrial applications, practicals, and case studies. Some of them also cover project contracting, administration and budgeting. The courses provide participants with a refresher in the relevant field, and lead up to current practice and the most up-to-date and advanced frontiers of each topic in mineral exploration for the modern exploration and mining industry.
Module 1 courses are lectured by Dr. Steffen Büttner (Structural Geology), Dr. Beth Kahle and Dr. Branko Corner (Exploration Geophysics), Mr. Dale Verran (Exploration Geochemistry), Dr. Michaela Frei (Remote Sensing and GIS), and Mr. Gordon Chunnett (Drilling Techniques). For further information on the lecturers, please see their short CVs below.
The courses are all held in the Geology Department, Rhodes University with morning lecture sessions from 08h30 to 12h30 hrs and afternoon practical sessions from 14h00 to 17h00 hrs. Transport and accommodation in Grahamstown are the delegates’ own responsibility. The department can provide information in this regard.
The cost of the five-day course is R7500 (exempt from VAT). Limited spaces are available and delegates are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.
