House Facilities

Maintenance and cleaning of each of the houses is attended to by Rhodes Housekeeping staff on a daily basis. Students are expected to maintain order in their personal rooms for the duration of their stay. 

Linen is provided to the students by the Housekeeping staff. Students are welcome to bring their own linen but they are then responsible for the laundering. Items provided by Housekeeping include:

  • duvet
  • duvet cover
  • bedding sheet 
  • mattress cover
  • two pillows
  • two pillow cases 
  • winter blanket
  • curtains
  • inner net curtains

Students in the houses can connect to Resnet (internet access) in their rooms through a LAN port which can be accessed through the student's username and password. Technical support is typically provided by Resnet Representative of Livingstone House. Printing facilities are also available in the House and it is charged on each student’s printing balance found online on the Rhodes University Student Support System (ROSS).

 Livingstone House 

Livingstone House is one of the smallest residences on campus. The house consists of thirty six student rooms on two floors. The rooms in Livingstone and Postgraduate accomodation have the following items:

  • a single bed with mattress
  • a sink
  • a mirror
  • a bedside cupboard
  • a table and chair
  • a bookcase
  • a desk lamp
  • a wardrobe
  • a notice board 
  • a heater 
  • a waste paper basket

 

 

 

 

 

Gilbert 6 House

Gilbert 6 House is a double storey stand-alone house to three students. Shared facilities downstairs include a small TV area with selected DSTV channels. The residents also have a kitchen area that has a fridge, stove, microwave and cuboards. Another shared facility includes a laundry room which has a washing machine and a tumble dryer.  

  

Gilbert 5 House

Gilbert 5 house consists of five single rooms. Students share two bathrooms, a kitchen and lounge area. A small braai area situated next to Gilbert 5 house offers the opportunity for relaxed social gatherings on weekends, which is accessable to all postgraduate students. Gilbert 5 is surrounded by a small and charming garden that is maintained by Rhodes University staff. A washing line is available next to residence

 

 Gilbert Postgraduate units

The Units offer private and convenient accommodation while allowing access to Gilbert Street 5 above for shared facilities such as laundry and microwave facilities. The units consist of eight single rooms each with an ensuite bathroom and study space.
