LETTER FROM 2012 HEAD STUDENT
Welcome to Dingemans
Your Warden, Tracey Chambers, the Sub-wardens, the Head Student and the House Committee would like to give you a warm welcome to your new home.
Congratulations on being accepted to Rhodes University. You will soon discover that you are a part of a very privileged few and hopefully learn how to use this position for the betterment of society. After all Rhodes is where leaders learn.
We the house committee will ensure that you settle in as quickly and as comfortably as possible. We will be there upon your arrival for Orientation and will be ready to introduce you to Rhodes University. Our main responsibility is to make you feel safe and comfortable and that none of your time is occupied with ideas of home sickness. We will offer you a sisterly supportive environment so that you and your parents have peace of mind as you transition from your old school and home to our beautiful campus.
Each Dingemans lady has their own room, fully furnished and equipped with a hand basin and three large mirrors. A bathroom, shower and toilets are shared by eight girls; we pride our selves in keeping these spaces neat and tidy.
Dingemans is a part of lower campus and is near the library, computer laboratories, most lecture venues, Eden Grove and the Steve Bhiko Union buildings (the swimming pool is found here). Campus Protection and the Sanatorium are right on our doorstep.
The first thing you will need to do when you arrive is REGISTER at Eden Grove. Once you have your admission papers, you may proceed to Dingemans where the House Committee members will be waiting to welcome you. Bring your parents with you; they will be pleased to see where you will be living. Your parents can also meet your Warden and fill her in on anything she needs to know regarding any medication you are on and get peace of mind that you will be in good hands.
Once you have bid your parents farewell, its time to get down to serious business – Orientation week! O-week will be on of the highlights of your time at varsity. In theses seven days you will be given great opportunities to meet your fellow first years and attend exciting social events. You will sit in on introductory lectures which will help you make your subject choices at the end of the week. O-week is a great time to explore the campus and get to know Rhodes, Grahamstown, Your House Committee and your Warden.
All this can be very overwhelming, but never fear because your House Committee will always be near. We will be there to answer any questions, problems or issues that you may have; remember that we are there to make your Rhodes experience as pain free as possible. Our contact details will be given to you when you arrive and our doors will always be open for you.
See you soon fellow Rhodent.
Love,
Mohau Maleeme
