Welcome to Milner House
MILNER HOUSE
Milner is named after Lord Alfred Milner. He was the British High Commissioner for South Africa and Governor of the Cape Colony between 1897 and 1899.
Milner House is one of the four undergraduate Residences that make up Hobson Hall.
There are 63 students living in Milner and they feel it’s the most beautiful Residence on campus!
A warm welcome to you if you have been allocated to Milner House – we hope you will enjoy your stay with us. The Warden Ruth Jackson lives in the House with the students and you can approach her with any concerns you may have. When you arrive at Milner House you will be met by our Sub-wardens and the House Committee who will guide you through Orientation week.
The Sub-wardens and House Committee have all been through Orientation week so understand that you may be feeling excited but overwhelmed, nervous or apprehensive and they will assist you to get up and running and explain to you about your new environment. They will give you a tour of the Residence to get your bearings, show you to your room and give you your room key where you will then unpack and settle in.
Orientation is geared to help you feel at home, to meet a variety of students, to find out about possible courses (by attending the introductory lectures), where the lecture venues are, how to find and use the Library and many other important facts.
Milner has two common rooms with DSTV, all rooms are connected to Resnet – the Rhodes University computer network, we are close to the University computer Labs. We have washing machines and tumble driers, a microwave and fridges for your use. Please don’t bring your own!
Milner girls are hard-working, fun-loving, involved in many campus and community projects, participate in Inter-Res sport and respectful of each other. This is where you makefriends for life so get involved, be open to new ideas, make new friends from far-flung places, expose yourself to different cultures and always remember why you are here “To Grow and get your Degree”.
Mrs Ruth Jackson is our Warden and lives in the Warden's Flat in Milner. She works at the Student Bureau during the day and can be reached via e-mail at r.jackson@ru.ac.za or by phone 046 - 603 8372. Mrs Jackson has an "open door" policy at home so anyone is welcome at any time of day / night.
This is Ten Bears, Ruth's faithful Canine Companion. She loves attention, meaty bones to nibble on during the day when mom's away at work and long walks in the afternoon to "de-stress" after a long day of protecting Milner gils (and napping of course).
