The department has teamed up with local youth soccer academy Sakhulutsha to assist in the development of young local soccer players. Siya Masinda, the founder of the academy, has been developing talent for over 10 years. His dream has always been to create a pathway for every aspiring footballer. Fortunately, HKE has been developing its own soccer research group in recent years, trying to improve grassroots development. With the partnership established, HKE has been assisting in the strength and conditioning of all Sakhulutsha players this year, whilst also encouraging Rhodes students to participate. The long term aims of the service learning project are to marry community engagement, research, learning and practical experience. With the assistant of RUCE, the journey has begun. An additional focus for the initiative is on the u/17 squad, who partake in the Discovery u/17 tournament in Johannesburg every December. It is important to not only improve players, but to also provide such development opportunities. In order to raise the funds, HKE and Sakhulutsha recently held a fund raising tournament involving 23 teams. Sponsored by local business BUCO, the tournament was a success, encouraging relationships within the greater Makana community, through healthy competition. This project is of vital importance to the department. Effective social upliftment needs relationships to be formed with local stakeholders in order to achieve sustainable long term projects. Projects such as this allow our department to make a fundamental difference in the lives of local community members.
