Conditions of Service
All staff should have a copy of the conditions of service related to employment. If this is not the case, the Director: HR’s office can be contacted for a copy of the relevant contract.
The Conditions of Service document covers the following issues:
- Leave conditions;
- Probation period;
- Resignation period;
- Requirements by the staff member to familiarise themselves with the policies of the University;
- Regulations related to copy-right and patents.
Academic working hours
The University prefers not to be prescriptive about working hours for academic staff given the nature of academia. Within the parameters of the expectations and responsibilities of academics and the employment contract of academics, the University respects the autonomy of individual departments to set norms regarding working hours, in particular, the presence/absence of academics during vacation periods. The University expects that vacation periods will be used for research, attending conferences and/or preparing teaching curriculum. However, it also recognizes the academic’s right to determine his/her own work schedule and consistent with departmental norms, it may not be necessary to be physically present in the department during vacation periods.
