Staff Structure and Posts
Staff Structure
The staffing structure in your department/division is critical to the achievement of the goals of this area and the provision of the expected service.
It is the HoDs/manager’s responsibility to ensure an optimal structure. If you need assistance in reviewing your current structure or considering a new one, please contact the Deputy Director: HR. Contact details are: http://www.ru.ac.za/humanresources/humanresources/meettheteam/
A vacancy or new post provides the opportunity to look at the structuring of one’s department.
Please note that major restructuring is considered by the IPC Staffing Committee once a year. Human Resources will submit the application to the Committee on your behalf. This means that HoDs / Managers will need to have approached the Deputy Director: HR well before the budget process is underway as well as sumbitted all the necessary information and job profiles. See, http://www.ru.ac.za/humanresources/policiesandinfo/information/budget/
Applying for Additional Posts
Applications for new posts are called for once a year by HR Division. The IPC Staffing Committee considers these requests.
Key to the approval of additional support staff posts is the following:
- That additional capacity is not required because of performance problems with current staff
- That capacity problems do not lie with current processes or systems
- That benchmarking relative to other organisations has been explored
- That alternative staffing models e.g. use of student assistance, temporary assistance has been explored.
You are advised to consult the Deputy Director: HR if you are considering applying for additional posts. Contact details can be found at: http://www.ru.ac.za/humanresources/humanresources/meettheteam/
If you are applying for a Support Staff post, please include the data applicable to your Division, in the application form that forms part of the Budget submission. The data can be copied from the following report: Position List Report
Academic HoDs are encouraged to consider: Allocation of Administrative Staff in Academic Deprtments.
Externally-funded entities using the Rhodes University name that wish to add posts to their existing staff establishment need to have the approval of the University, via the Institutional Planning Committee. Such approval will normally be given provided there is adequate funding available and where there are no other inhibiting resource implications e.g. space. The Institutional Planning Committee has delegated authority to the Director: HR to approve such applications. However, should the Director: HR have concerns, these will be tabled with the IPC.
