
Undergraduate Courses
At the undergraduate level the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science offers a four-semester major in Ichthyology, which may be taken as a major subject for the BSc and BJourn degrees.
To major in Ichthyology (ICH), a candidate is required to obtain credit in the following Rhodes University courses: Cell Biology (CEL 101); Zoology (ZOO 101); Botany (BOT 102); Ichthyology (ICH 201, ICH 202, ICH 301 and ICH 302); Chemistry (CHE 101); and any two first-year semester credits in Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science - with the exception of the literacy course Computer Science (CSC 1L1).
The courses cover fish biology, aquaculture, oceanography, fisheries management, stock assessment, scientific writing, introduction to data analysis, and an introduction to the philosophy of science. The courses are comprised of lectures, tutorials and practicals. The writing of essays, writing of scientific papers, and the presentation of seminars are important components of the courses.
