Opportunities for Rhodes University Postgraduates and Staff
Although there are no consistent exchange programmes for Rhodes University Staff and Postgraduates, Rhodes often enters into short-term agreements that allow Staff and Postgraduates the chance to go on exhchange with universities around the world. On this page, you will find all the current opportunities available to you as a Staff Member or Postgraduate.
Erasmus Mundus
Rhodes is among a number of South African universities who regularly take part in various scholarship and exchange programmes run between South African and European Union universities. In the past, Rhodes was one of the target universities for the SAPIENT programme run by Erasmus Mundus. You can find out more about previous experiences with this programme here. Unfortunately, this programme is no longer running but there are other programmes currently in operation.
EMA2SA III, EUROSA III and EU-SATURN
Three contracts have been signed between South African Universities and European Union universities. These programmes are all extensions of the successful Erasmus Mundus agreements of the past. They give Masters and Doctoral Students the opportunity to study at a European University for either a short period on exchange or for a complete degree. There are also opportunities available for academic staff who wish to broaden their resource base. In all cases, there are scholarships for South Africans to visit the European Universities involved in the contracts.
EMA2SA has two Target Groups:
- Target Group 1: South African universities who have signed an agreement with Erasmus Mundus. Students and staff from these universities are given preference for the scholarship programmes.
- Target Group 2: South African universities who have not signed an agreement with Erasmus Mundus. Although this group does not receive preference, a certain number of students and staff are accepted from this group. Rhodes is currently in Target Group 2 for all three contracts.
In 2011 Erasmus Mundus Action 2 scholarships were awarded to 160 South African students and university staff members and in 2012 a total of 90 scholarships have been awarded to date. More scholarships are expected to still be awarded this year. This means that even though these scholarships are highly sought after, there are often spaces available for universities from Target Group 2 (non-partnered South African universities).
Some important Information:
- The scholarships are for masters and doctoral studies at European partner universities in a wide range of fields as well as for university staff.
- Students and staff of all public universities who are South African nationals are eligible to apply.
- As members of Rhodes University, students and staff should apply as Target Group 2.
- Applications must be done online.
- The closing date for applications to ema2sa III and EUROSA III is mid-March 2013 and for applications to EU-SATURN it is mid-February 2013.
