Keele University
Lindelwa Bolani went on exchange to Keele University in the second semester of 2011.
Love:Keele
When I first arrived at Keele University I was mesmerized by the campus. Situated in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England- I felt like I had stepped back into the 1950s due to the rich culture surrounding me. Keele University is double the size of Rhodes University, very green and very cold. I absolutely loved exploring the grounds, from spotting 7 lakes on campus, to the Keele Chapel and Keele Hall -I was impressed to see my new home for the next semester.
When you’re in England for a semester there is so much to do. I signed up with the Keele Netball team and headed to Liverpool for the World Netball Series and North Wales for a competitive league game. South Africa was in the World Netball Series and it was lovely supporting our Protea ladies despite the loss against England. England in the second semester gets very cold. I experienced some heavy snow whilst I was at Keele but waking up to the view of trees and grass covered in fluffy white snow makes it totally worth it!
My favourite experiences during exchange had to be going to Old Trafford, Manchester and exploring the big, wonderful streets of London. Old Trafford was an amazing experience, from spending my whole weekly allowance at the Megastore to sitting at South Stand, Row 9. It was so much fun watching my favourite team live taking a 4-nil lead against the Wolverhampton Wolves. The English are very passionate about football and that spirit and support I experienced at Old Trafford is one I will never forget.
London. My favourite city in this world. From the black taxis to the red double decker buses and public telephones. It is exactly like the movies, but only better in real life! I visited Madame Tussauds, The London Eye, The Kensington Palace and shopped till I dropped. The shopping in London is to die-for and the nightlife of London is an unforgettable experience. A highlight of visiting London was seeing the changing of the guards at the Buckingham Palace. Changing the Guard is the process involving a new guard exchanging duties with the old Guard at Buckingham Palace. I was mesmerized by the precision and professionalism of the guards and soldiers.
My experience at Keele is one I will never forget. I met amazing people and made friends that I still keep in touch with. The standard of academics at Keele is very high and I believe this experience will benefit everyone in the future. I believe Keele University is one of the best exchange programmes Rhodes University offers. Travelling around the United Kingdom is an exciting and unforgettable experience.
A very big thank you to the Rhodes University International Office and Keele University International Office for making this exchange possible. I would like to extend a personal thank you to Susie Radloff for all the help and advice she gave me before and after my exchange programme. To my friends and family who supported me whilst I was on exchange: thank you very much, you guys are the best and make me feel blessed every single day.
