School Overview 2009
Keys to Contemporary South Africa
Week 1: Core Module
The macro-context: six seminars that interpret the themes of the module in the national framework.
The micro-context: the final seminar is a fieldtrip around Grahamstown, where Rhodes University is situated, to illustrate the realities and effects, in the local area, of the policies and processes covered in the first five seminars.
Week 2: Festival Module
This Module aims to allow students to immerse themselves in South African art and culture, primed with the background understanding they gained in the Core Module and the Festival Module seminars. The annual Grahamstown National Arts Festival offers an extensive range of music, drama, film, poetry, cabaret, street theatre, public lectures and exhibitions. It is an unparalleled opportunity to experience the diversity of South Africa in a single place and a short time. There will be a feast of culture and cuisine within walking distance of the Rhodes University campus.
Week 3 & 4: Choice of one Elective Module
The Elective Modules enable students to explore their special interest areas in greater depth under the guidance of experts within each of two fields offered by the International School this year. Each Elective Module has a practical component that complements what has been studied theoretically in a week-long set of seminars. Students are offered the opportunity of being exposed to real-life contexts that allow them to gain hands-on field experience.
Students make a choice of ONE of the two Elective Modules offered at the International School this year.
