The ISER at Rhodes University in conjunction with the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management at the University of Witwatersrand jointly hosted the Harold Wolpe Memorial Lecture in Johannesburg on the 9 October 2015. The lecture, entitled Diagnosing African Politics, was delivered by Dr Carlos Lopes, the eighth UN Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa. Prof Van Niekerk of the ISER welcomed attendees on behalf of Rhodes University. He indicated that the ISER was deeply honoured to be associated with engaging the intellectual legacy of a scholar and liberation fighter of Wolpe’s caliber. The memorial lecture forms part of a larger, joint research project on the state, social change and public policy, drawing on the work of Wolpe. The project is being developed by scholars based in the ISER and at the University of the Witwatersrand, as per an agreement with the Harold Wolpe Memorial Trust.
Dr Lopes was then introduced by Prof Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand. A copy of his lecture can be downloaded in pdf form at https://www.wits.ac.za/media/news-migration/files/3tlpj_157584001444724197.pdfSource: Harold Wolpe Memorial Lecture 2015
