The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) takes great pride in the appointment of a member of its academic staff, Prof Rebecca Surender, as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oxford. A Fellow of Green Templeton College and an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention at the University of Oxford, Prof Surender was appointed to the ISER to support the development of social policy as a core focus of our work. Prof Surender led ISER research on the implementation, policy dynamics and effects of the South African government’s proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) reforms. She also supervised post-graduate students in the ISER, made key contributions to the development of our post-graduate support system, chaired the ISER Research Committee, and served as a member of the Rhodes University Senate.
Pro-Vice-Chancellors at the University of Oxford support and act on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor in the matters delegated to them. As Pro-Vice-Chancellor (without portfolio) and Advocate for Diversity of the University of Oxford, Prof Surender will direct and coordinate the university’s equality and diversity initiatives, playing a key role in shaping the Oxford of the future.
The ISER, and Rhodes University more broadly, value the contribution that Prof Surender has made, and we wish her well in her new post. Although sad to lose her as a member of our academic staff, we are immensely proud of her achievement.
