Aquina is currently pursuing her PhD studies at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), Rhodes University, Grahamstown focusing on the political economy of health care reform in South Africa. Her study will provide an in-depth analysis of the key actors (government, capital, civil society) and political and economic factors that have influenced the National Health Insurance (NHI) policy process in the democratic period in South Africa. The study will give special attention to the transition from the Green Paper to the White Paper on NHI.
Aquina holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Natal), BSc (Hons) Reproductive Medicine (Stellenbosch), and MBA (Wits). She also holds a Certificate in Programme and Project Management (Wits), and a Certificate in Social Security and Health Financing (ILO). Her academic and professional interest are in the areas of health policy development, health care financing and economics, and health systems strengthening and on regulatory matters pertaining to the practice of medical profession.
