Abel Gwaindepi

Abel Gwaindepi grew up in Masvingo, Zimbabwe and after matriculating in 2006, he was awarded a Presidential Scholarship in 2008 to study at the University of Fort hare.  He graduated with Bachelor of Commerce degree (cum laude) in 2010.  He was awarded the Andrew Mellon Prestigious Scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Economics in 2011 at Rhodes University. Pursuing his interests in economics of inclusion, Abel joined ISER in 2012 reading towards an interdisciplinary Masters project in Economics and Social Policy with funding from ISER’s SANPAD-funded project on the Developmental State. His supervisors are Prof Robert van Niekerk and David Fryer. During the reading of his Masters he also works as a research assistant at ISER. His current research interests, which also inform his Masters project, include development economics, social policy, social compacts and comparative political economy.

The working title for his research project is “Developmental State, Social Policy and Social Compacts: A comparative analysis of the South African case”.
