Ageing, Wellbeing and Development: A Comparative Study of Brazil and South Africa
Background: This is a two year project supported by a New Dynamics in Ageing grant that will build on a very successful study of ‘Non-contributory pensions and poverty prevention: A comparative study of Brazil and South Africa’ undertaken in 2001-2003 www.idpm.ac.uk/ncpps
Aim: The earlier project was made possible by a grant awarded in a highly competitive round by the UK’s Department of International Development. The new project will attempt to revisit the 1000 older households in South Africa and Brazil interviewed in 2002 to explore income and livelihood dynamics. The same team of researchers will work on the new project.
Researchers: Project leaders are Armando Barrientos (University of Manchester) and Peter Lloyd-Sherlock, (University of East Anglia). Co-researchers are João Saboia (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Valerie Møller (Rhodes University), Monica Ferreria (University of Cape Town), and colleagues at HelpAge International. Development Research Africa will assist with data collection in South Africa.
