Gender Activism: Perspectives on the South African transition, institutional cultures & everyday life (8&9 March 2008)
The Rosa Luxemburg Seminar was held at Rhodes University on 8th & 9th March, sponsored by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. This is an annual event that celebrates the anniversary of Rosa Luxemburg's birthday and takes the form of informal lectures and workshops with a participatory focus. Leading activists and civil society members interact with academics in an open forum that provides a useful and dynamic interface between the theory and the practice based professions. The papers presented are currently being edited into a book format and will soon be available online.
Theory, Practice, Action (28&29 March 2007)
The Municipal Services Project held an end-of-project conference in March, attended by over 150 participants from universities, government and civil society. Prof John Saul and Prof Giovanni Arrighi were keynote speakers. The conference showcased the MSP’s work over the last three years and developed ideas for future research. Quality of Life in South Africa (21 June 2006)
A mini conference to launch ‘Quality of Life in South Africa – Ten Years into Democracy’ was held on 21 June 2007. Invited guests included members of interested government departments and research based universities, the Human Sciences Research Council, and delegates from the private sector.
A report-back seminar on a study of community perceptions of Tuberculosis and compliance was held in Grahamstown, at which health workers were briefed on results of the pilot study.
African Perceptions, African Realities - South African capital and sub-imperial expansion in Africa (July 2008)
Findings from the fieldwork for the South Africa in Africa Research Initiative (SAARI) case studies were presented as draft papers at a three-day conference in July. The conference explored conceptual frameworks for the study of regional economic processes. Papers presented included: “Shopping Malls in Africa”, “Food Frontiers and Resistance to SA retail expansion”, “SA Capital and Zambia’s Dairy Industry” and inputs by academics from Rhodes, SUNY Binghamton, The Johns Hopkins University and the HSRC.
