Dr Griffin undertakes research in the broad area of environmental water quality management. As such, his research areas encompass three aspects of environmental water quality: water chemistry, assessment of resource quality using biological indicators, and toxicological assessment of resource or effluent quality. Research undertaken includes some contract research or consulting undertaken for a range of companies, but is more commonly applied research addressing problems and challenges faced by the water sector nationally.

Dr Griffin is currently leading two projects, and is a member of the research team on several others. His current major work focus is leading a team assessing means of operationalization of toxicity testing for freshwater quality management in South Africa. Recent research projects include assessment of water quality and changes in water quality in light of known drivers in the Olifants and Crocodile River catchments, assessment of the extent of compliance with the freshwater ecological Reserve in the Crocodile River catchment, and an assessment and comparison of methods for introduction of whole effluent toxicity testing for water quality management. He also undertakes biomonitoring surveys where these are requested, specializing in biomonitoring of water quality using diatoms.
