About mLab Southern Africa

mLab Southern Africa, (short for mobile applications laboratory), is a brand new initiative that supports innovation and entrepreneurship though mobile applications and content in the Southern Africa region. mLab Southern Africa is headquarted at The Innovation Hub in Tshwane, South Africa, with the first satellite office in Cape Town.

mLab Southern Africa supports the mobile developer community through a range of services including handset testing, training, business mentoring, research, access to finance and markets, events and networking opportunities.

mLab Southern Africa and mLab East Africa, in Nairobi, are the first of a number of mLabs to be launched around the world as part of the Creating Sustainable Businesses in the Knowledge Economy programme, supported by the World Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of Finland and Nokia.

Details

Out of the Cape Town office we will run all social media efforts of mLab Southern Africa, organise and run events, publish a regular newsletter and do research into mobile innovation in Southern Africa. We are looking for a brilliant young research and writing intern who is interested in all things mobile, especially in the use of mobile phones to make the world a better place, and to support innovation and entrepreneurship. You must be a thorough researcher, a clear writer, and have a love for technology. This is an ideal position for a student or graduate to get experience in social media, mobile technologies and start-ups.

Duties

  • Managing the Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube accounts
  • Writing blog posts
  • Online and telephone research
  • Conducting online, telephonic or face-to-face interviews
  • Attending events and blogging and tweeting about them
  • General administrative duties

Details

The position is based in the Cape Town CBD and is for 20 hours per week. The internship is for up to 3 months. There is also the possibility of this being a holiday internship for students. This is not a paid internship, but travel and communication expenses will be covered.
