Scholarships
OSISA Scholarship
The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa scholarship offers funding to study full-time towards your Master of Arts degree. Applicants must be mid-career women media workers, academics and journalists who are leaders or potential leaders in the field of media from Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Angola, Botswana and Namibia.
Applicants must supply a letter of motivation with their application stating why they are eligible for the scholarship.
Unesco Scholarships
The UNESCO scholarship is aimed at educators in African journalism and media education institutions. The field of research undertaken should deal with issues around African media and enhancing its capacity through education and training. The successful candidate should be competent in English and be able to enrol for 18 months of full-time study.
Applicants for a UNESCO scholarship need to include a motivation letter when applying for the Journalism and Media Studies Masters programme. The letter must state why the applicant is eligible for the scholarship.
Economic Journalism Scholarships
- Two scholarships to the value of R60 000 each are available for students who agree to do their research theses in the area of economics journalism. Candidates seeking to apply for these should express interest and motivate their eligibility within their cover letters submitted with the application forms.
- Three scholarships to the value of R50 000 each are available for students who are agreeable to doing their research theses in the following areas:
- Media development: what are the tax regimes impacting on media in SADC:in particular, VAT on print media, and import tax.
- Ownership patterns in 4 SADC countries: with attention to legal environment; cross- and multiple and foreign ownerships; family and corporate and state; gender and ownership.
- Ownership patterns in another 4 SADC countries: with attention to legal environment; cross- and multiple and foreign ownerships; family and corporate and state; gender and ownership.
