Be it through its series of public lectures, the latest of which was by Prof Bob Mattes, from UCT’s Department of Political Studies on ’Born Frees’: The Prospects for Generational Change in Post-apartheid South Africa; to its dynamic Being & Belonging multimedia exhibition and Think!Fest programme over the National Arts Festival; to visits by prominent national and international media personalities and academic such as Anton Harber, author of the lauded Diepsloot book, Dr Katrin Voltmer of Leeds University, UCLA’s  Prof You-Tien Hsing and many others; to its vibrant online presence; the JMS Mellon Humanities Focus Area is constantly casting light on notions of citizenship and the role of the media within this context, while at the same time playing a dynamic role in the generation of new discourses and ideas relevant to South Africa and the world as they are now.
