JMS Welcomes Ms. Mia Malan

Mia Malan lectures health journalism atRhodesUniversity. She’s also project manager of the institution’s Discovery Health Journalism Centre, and covers the health beat for the Mail and Guardian newspaper. Prior to joining Rhodes in May, Mia was Knight Health Journalism fellow, based inJohannesburg. Her duties included the mentoring and training of health reporters at the Mail and Guardian and Soweto TV. Before this, she worked for Internews Network, a United States-based international media development organisation. Mia established and headed its health journalism programme inKenyafor four years, after which she was Internews’s Senior Health Journalism Advisor, in Washington D.C, for an additional three years. During this time she authored two HIV reporting training manuals and recruited and managed trainers in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
Mia has also been a Reuters Foundation Fellow atOxfordUniversity. She began her journalism career at the SABC, where she worked for seven years. As a reporter, she won a number of awards, including CNN African Radio Journalist of the Year and the Kaiser Foundation Award for Excellence in Health Journalism and the USA-SA Leadership Award for Health Reporting. In 2008, she won the Best Director Award at the Baltimore International Women’s Film Festival in the United States for her film, ‘My Dead Husband’s Land.’ She has a Masters Degree in Science Journalism from the University of Stellenbosch.
