There are various projects that the school are involved with which serves its students but also the greater community.
Africa Media MatrixThe School of Journalism and Media Studies is housed in a brand new state-of-the-art teaching facility, the Africa Media Matrix (AMM). The AMM is purpose-built to be at the heart of the journalism and new information and communication technologies in the African context. Its research and teaching programms will keep abreast of the changing critical issues in South Africa and the continent. In this way African journalists will be equipped with skills and research to deal with changing politics, economics, technologies and management styles. |

Grocott's MailGrocott’s Mail is a twice-weekly newspaper that serves the community of Grahamstown as well asproviding a place where students in the departmentcan gain hands-on experience. This is a uniqueopportunity for students to learn how a newspaperworks. This year the JMS 4 writers and PGDip students will embark on a student mentoringprogramme at Grocott’s as part of their writing andediting course. | |
Highway AfricaThis conference, co-hosted by the School and the South African Broadcasting Corporation, has become one of the most exciting New Media events on the continent. Since its launch in 1997, Highway Africa has developed a reputation as the conference that engages with the most important issues facing New Media practitioners in Africa. |
Sol Plaatje Institute for Media LeadershipEstablished in late 2002, the Sol Plaatje Media Leadership Institute is located within Rhodes University's Department of Journalism and Media Studies. The Institute is a pioneering initiative that provides courses for present and future media leaders to improve their editorial and business skills. The Institute offers high-level editorial and business management courses that attracts participants from South Africa as well as the continent, as well as a one year Intensive Post Graduate Diploma in Media Management. | |
Centre for Economics JournalismThe centre aims to bring about continuous improvement of the media coverage of economics, business and development in Africa. We will do this through research, education and training, and engagement with media, business, government and society. | |

Knight Foundation mobile media and communicationThis year marks the second phase of the Knight foundation JMS based project which entails the Grocotts Mail Online, research, mobile media(Iindaba Ziyafika), citizen journalism and software development. Grocott's Mail Online is the internet based publishing platfom that hosts all the publishing of content whether it hard news, mobile generated content or citizen journalism. The software development component has come up with a open source based news and workflow management for small independent news papers called Nika.
