Rhodes Journalism Review (RJR)
Edited by Anthea Garman
The Rhodes Journalism Review, established in 1991, is a specialist magazine for journalists. The writers consist of practitioners in the field and media experts world-wide. Within the last five years the Rhodes Journalism Review has taken a powerfully interventionist stance, setting agendas and promoting critical media issues with very high credibility as a forum. It communicates successfully with striking and highly accessible design. It is distributed to every newsroom in South Africa as well as training institutions and universities teaching journalism, communication and media studies, and also reaches further a field into African newsrooms and internationally. The editor is Anthea Garman, senior lecturer in the school.
Cue
This is the daily paper for the National Arts Festival which takes place in Grahamstown in July each year – there are as many editions of Cue as there are days in the Festival. Cue has grown into an essential read, providing Festival visitors with information they require to navigate a large and diverse festival. About 30 students from the different print specialisations (writing and editing, photojournalism and design) come together to work on a single project. Under the direction of School staff, staffers gain “real life” experience in management, financial control, research, marketing, advertising sales and lay-out, reporting, writing, photography, editing, lay-out, production and distribution. In addition, practising arts journalists from all over the country who come to report on the Festival also work in the Cue newsroom. Average daily circulation is over 2 000, with readership being much higher.
