A collaborative project between researchers from Rhodes University, UCT, the Free University in  Amsterdam, and Media Tenor was conducted with the aim of investigating the way in which various forms of media shape youth identity in South Africa. The project was led by Prof Jane Duncan, and contributions were made by the following members from the School of Journalism and Media Studies:  Prof Anthea Garman, Prof Lynette Steenveld, and Prof Larry Strelitz, as well as contributions by Dr Vanessa Malila and other members from the Mellon Media and Citizenship Project. The study was funded by the South African Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development (SANPAD) and culminated in a detailed report of the findings and current theoretical debates in the field of citizenship, youth and media.
