ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (MEDIA STUDIES)

a.collins@ru.ac.za Room 106

BA Hons, MA (Rhodes); MA, PhD (University of California)

Anthony Collins a dual background in Psychology and Cultural Studies, and is primarily interested in understanding how the social worlds in which we live shape who we are. He completed his PhD in the History of Consciousness programme at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. His work covers two main areas. The first is violence and trauma, examining the causes and patterns of violence in South Africa, the ways in which it is represented and understood, and how to reduce violence and support survivors. The second area concerns consumer culture and emerging youth identities in contemporary South Africa. This explores the ways in which cultural and economic globalization, and the advances in media technologies, shape how we think about ourselves and relate to each other.
