Professor Guy Berger oversees all the school's projects. He also teaches and researches in new media, media policy, convergence and journalism education. He is chairperson of the Board of Grocott’s Mail, and writes a column online for
the Mail & Guardian. Berger is also active in the South African National Editors Forum, and won
the organisation’s Nat Nakasa Award for media integrity in 2006.

Francis’ teaching commitments include modules on the Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management
and facilitation of professionally orientated short courses for media leaders.
Francis provides overall leadership in all areas of the SPI’s activities, including professional
training, postgraduate studies, research, creating networking opportunities for media leaders
and producing publications on media management

Pete Du Toit/ Deputy Director SPI

Peter has been responsible for developing and running the Department of J&MS’
media management courses over the past seven years, which also involved an intensive
research project into the editorial management training needs across the SADC region.

He has worked with the Times Media Ltd stable of papers in Port Elizabeth and served as news editor for the Development Media Agency in Grahamstown.

Peter has a BA Hons (Politics) from the University of Port Elizabeth and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes and is completing a M.Ed in Higher Education at Rhodes.

Mandisa Kwatsha/MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICERSPI

Mandisa is responsible for spreading the word about the broad range of short courses offered by the SPI. She ensures that journalists, editors and media managers wanting to upgrade or fine-tune their skills are steered towards the right programmes.

She plays a vital role in coordinating many of the SPI’s courses and ensuring that course participants are made to feel welcome when they visit the institute.

Mandisa also takes charge of informing aspirant students about the SPI’s year-long Post-Graduate Diploma in Media Management, and as a graduate of the programme, is able to offer interested students first-hand information about the course.

African Reserve Bank and the Standard Bank of South Africa. The aim of the centre is to improve
the coverage of economics, finance and business on the continent. Reg is researching
the landscape of the business media in South Africa.

Khaya's job entails conducting trainings and managing the Grocotts Mail Citizen Journalism Newsroom.

He trains learners and citizens basic skills in citizen journalism.
