Director: Institutional Planning Unit

Purpose
As the head the Institutional Planning Unit, the Director will ensure that there is on-going and timely identification of the institutional research that is required for institutional planning and policy development purposes, that institutional research that supports academic and institutional planning is undertaken effectively, that there are appropriate institutional planning and development systems, processes, and structures in line with the overall vision and mission of Rhodes University. The Director of the Institutional Planning Unit will also coordinate and service the activities of the Institutional Planning Committee of the University and all its sub-committees and ad hoc structures.
Requirements
As the appropriate candidate will need to possess intellectual and scholarly abilities related to analyzing, processing, synthesizing and presenting data and information orally and in writing, the ability to design structures and processes related to institutional planning, and the capability of undertaking, commissioning and supervising research, she/he will possess at:
- A relevant Masters’ Degree and 10 years’ relevant experience.
OR
- A relevant PhD and 7 years’ relevant experience.
Relevant experience shall be that in the higher education sector including: -
- A working knowledge of academic processes, the institutional research and planning and academic planning environment, the functioning of the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Council on Higher Education and other bodies that play a role in higher education
- At least 3 years experience working at a management and strategic level in a complex organization, where a working knowledge of strategic planning processes has been developed and the nature of such processes in the higher education context is understood.
- Active participation in senior and key decision-making forums
- Having worked with senior management to create improvements within an organization
- Previous experience in the establishment of systems and processes (not necessarily setting up systems on own but could also be part of a collaboration with others) , to gather, analyze, synthesize and report on data, including having worked with technology to enhance efficiencies and presentation
- Previous experience in introducing new policies, systems, procedures and practices that require individuals to change their current way of thinking and functioning
Exposure to the formulation of research questions and process and different methodologies, methods and techniques for undertaking research, preferably beyond research that that was undertaken as part a Masters or Doctoral degree qualification

- Interviews: 30th or 31st of May 2013
5. An employment check will be conducted on the successful candidate.
Remuneration
Pension / Provident fund (contributory) Total Cost to Company: R684, 823 per annum
Provident fund (non-contributory) Total Cost to Company: R684, 823 per annum
(The above remuneration is inclusive of the 2013 salary annual increase)
