Rhodes honours Abdullah Ibrahim

Dr Abdullah Ibrahim, Ms Marlene Dumas, Justice Kathleen Satchwell and Dr Gordon Cragg to receive Honorary Doctorates at the 2010 Graduation.

Excited students and proud parents are eager for the 2010 Rhodes University’s graduation ceremonies taking place at the 1820 Settlers National Monument from 8 April to 10 April.

The opening address on 8 April will be given by Rhodes alumnus Peter Harris, Executive Chairman of the Resolve Group and award-winning author of the book “In a different time”.

Along with Harris, graduates will have the privilege of hearing addresses from the four luminaries that will be receiving Honorary Doctorates this year. Selected for the significant contribution each has made in their respective field of expertise and to society in general, the recipients are Dr Gordon Cragg, Dr Abdullah Ibrahim, Justice Kathleen Satchwell and Ms Marlene Dumas.

Dr Ibrahim and Ms Dumas will address the Faculty of Humanities on Friday morning, the honourable Justice Kathleen Satchwell will address the Faculties of Law, Education and Pharmacy on Friday evening and Dr Cragg the Science Faculty on Saturday morning.

Dr Rob Davies, the Minister of Trade and Industry, will address the Faculty of Commerce.

Rhodes graduates will benefit from listening to such influential speakers this year, hopefully inspiring them to make great strides towards the development of our country and the global community.

The decision to award these honorary doctorates is made through an Honorary Doctorate Committee consisting of Council, Senate and SRC representatives. This committee makes nominations to both Council and Senate and those bodies vote on each nomination. If either body has a “no” vote of 25% or higher the person is not invited to receive the Honorary Doctorate. The candidates have contributed significantly to their fields of expertise and it is their notable strides in these areas that inspired their nominations.
