Tribute to Prof Kader Asmal

Higher Education South Africa (HESA) wishes to convey its sincere condolences to family and friends on the passing away of Prof Kader Asmal. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest intellectuals and politicians in South Africa. He was an extraordinary person who will be remembered for his noble and courageous capacity to challenge contentious issues and to engage in robust discussions.

He will certainly be remembered as the education minister (1999-2004) who vigorously continued and extended the reforms of his predecessor, Sibusiso Bengu, and his influence in the education system. He will be remembered for his unwavering and independent critique to advance knowledge and understanding of key issues for our democracy.

“As part of his commitment to the creation of a just and democratic South Africa, Professor Asmal leaves a strong legacy in the higher education system through his contribution to scholarship and in the shaping of the South African higher education system to address the imbalances of the apartheid era”, says the Chairperson of HESA.

His deep commitment to the ideals of a democratic society and advancement of human rights in South Africa will be remembered by all its citizens. His family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers.
