Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

Last week Mathe Maema, a PhD candidate in the department of Computer Science, flew to Zurich, Switzerland, as one of the finalists of the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship.

In Zurich, Maema attended the Google scholars’ retreat, from 20 to 22 June.

As part of the retreat, Maema met with the scholarship recipients and other finalists for this year. She will also have an opportunity to meet some of the industry leaders in her field and present her work.

Maema is currently working on developing a platform that will enable indigenous knowledge of communities within the Siyakhula Living Lab to be captured, organised, stored and disseminated.

One of the key goals of this platform is to facilitate the integration of indigenous knowledge into education to contextualise learning.
