The 17th Highway Africa Conference and 13th edition of the Highway Africa New Media Awards take place this weekend from 1-2 September at Rhodes University.
Journalists, activists and academics alike will deliberate on the theme 'Speaking truth to power? Media, politics and accountability’.
They will discuss questions surrounding African media’s role in holding political authority accountable and journalistic codes of conduct. "Ours is really a great conference," said Highway Africa Director Chris Kabwato. "One in which ourselves as journalists and academics are looking inwards at what the problems are, at what is 'broken’ in terms of ethics."
But, says Kabwato, it’s also much more. There will be a range of activities open to those who registered in time, including hands-on training workshops, book launches and networking events. And, most importantly, the prestigious Telkom-Highway Africa New Media Awards.
This year the awards will be focused on celebrating information communication technology (ICT) and its innovative use in journalism.
Kabwato said that although registration for the conference has closed, the public are invited to come and take a peek at two 100% electric cars, which will be on display at Rhodes University’s Eden Grove lecture complex from tomorrow until Monday.
He even hinted members of the public might be able to take a Nissan LEAF for a test spin. Local artists and artisans will also sell their wares at the conference.
