Several students, staff and alumni from Rhodes University are among this year’s Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans for 2018. Every year, the Mail & Guardian celebrates the most interesting and talented young South Africans under 35, who have shown themselves to be leaders.

The list from Rhodes includes our own Dr Hleze Kunju, Mr Tladi Marumo, and Ms Muthumuni Managa, who had the following to share:

Dr Hleze Kunju – Education category

“It's such a great honour to know that the work I do makes an impact. This means that there is a bright future for African languages, but that future is in our hands and we need to get the work done. I hope this can also send a message that the time to discuss decolonisation is almost over and it's now time to do what needs to be done.”

Ms Muthumuni Managa – Science & Technology category

“It’s an honour and privilege to be recognised as a young South African making contribution to the knowledge of science.”

Mr Tladi Marumo – Justice & Law category

“Being selected on this platform is a public acknowledgment of my work as an outward manifestation of a real and unqualified personal faith in the future of humanity. It is a compelling statement that I am among the young South Africans who are our country’s current courageous hope of leadership. I am conscious of the responsibilities which accompany this privilege and my role in the making of the future. The future, unlike the past, inquires not about power, but as to whether our contemporary decisions and actions will, in years to come, be found to have created conditions in which social justice can flourish for generations who come after us.”
