Law Market Day, 27 February 2013
The Rhodes University Law Market Day took place on the 27th of February. Despite conflicting weather reports, we awoke to a crisp blue morning and the sure promise of an exciting day. We were not disappointed. The Law Society and its wonderful helpers, made up of student volunteers, arrived early dressed to impress. Name tags dispensed, tables set up and finishing touches made, the attending delegates began to arrive. Delegates from a record breaking 21 organisations attended the Market Day. By mid-morning, the marquee was buzzing with students taking full advantage of the the event. The morning tea was sponsored by Routledge Modise, who provided a delightful spread of savoury and sweet treats. This was preceded by a spirited presentation given by Michal Johnson who discussed the "do's and dont's" when applying to law firms. Before we could even take a breath the morning had waxed and waned, with even more students arriving. By lunchtime, the lawns in front of the Law Faculty were filled with law students from all years. The formal welcome address was given by the Dean of Law, Professor Campbell. Lunch was sponsored by the internationally recognised firm of Norton Rose, preceded by a presentation by old Rhodian Ismal Laher. Students were rewarded for their attendance with a magnificient lunch spread and the opportunity to converse with delegates from the attending organisations hailing from all corners of the country. Though the heat took its toll, delegates, students and faculty members remained in high spirits right through to the Cocktail function. The Cocktail function was well attended and wonderfully put together by Gabi Knott, the Public Liason of the Rhodes Law Society as well as the market day helpers. The marquee and cocktail were generously sponsored by Adams & Adams, Smith Tabata, Webber Wentzel and Werksmans, who all gave informal and well received presentations on behalf of their firms. Students, faculty staff and delegates stayed well into the evening conversing with old Rhodians, prospective employers and fellow students. The entire event was hailed as a great success and all the people that made it possible have to be complimented for their professionalism, efficiency and commitment.
