On 22 February 2019, the Rhodes University Faculty of Law hosted the annual Faculty Opening Function. At this event, the Dean, Professor Rosaan Krüger, welcomed the students and staff to a new academic year. Thereafter, the faculty staff and students attentively listened to a heart-warming speech delivered by Justice M Madlanga, Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. As a Rhodes alumnus, Justice Madlanga talked about the highlights of his days as an LLB student, where his passion for Administrative and Public Law was born. The Judge further spoke about the new Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014 and how it will affect the work of our students one day as they are the future legal practitioners of South Africa. Justice Madlanga’s words were indeed aimed at the hearts of the students as he encouraged them to repair the reputation of our profession. “A lawyer must never be the source of his client’s lies”, said the Judge as he shared words of wisdom, and inspired our young minds. The Faculty is grateful and honoured to have Justice Madlanga come all the way to visit his alma mater and assist in presenting academic prizes to our top achievers for the year 2018. Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and achievements. For a full copy of Justice Madlanga’s speech, click here.
