Rob Midgley is Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic Affairs and Research at the University of Fort Hare. He graduated B Com LLB from Rhodes University, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town. His first academic appointment in 1981 was in the Mercantile Law Department at Fort Hare after which he came to Rhodes as a Senior Lecturer in 1984. Rob was appointed Professor of Law at Rhodes University in 1993 and was Dean of Law from 1996 to 2000, and again from 2004 to mid-2008 when he took up his current appointment. He served as President of the Society of Law Teachers of Southern Africa (2003-2004) and Chairperson of the South African Law Deans Association (2004-2005 and 2007-2008). Rhodes appointed him Professor Emeritus in 2009.
Rob lectured Introduction to Law to first-year students and Law of Delict to final years throughout his tenure at Rhodes, and also lectured Negotiation and Mediation. His fields of research include the Law of Delict, Appropriate Dispute Resolution, and Legal Education. He has over 100 publications to his credit, including three books, Lawyers’ Professional Liability (1992), Principles of Delict (2nd ed, 1997; 3rd ed, 2005) also published as the Delict section in The Law of South Africa (First Reissue, Vol 8 part 1, 1996; 2nd ed 2005), which he co-authored with J C van der Walt, and The Law of Delict in South Africa (2010), which he co-edited with Max Loubser.
Rob is a member of several Editorial Committees and was a member of the NRF Assessment Panel for Law (2002) and has since 2003 been a member of the NRF Panel of Independent Assessors. He has been an NRF-rated researcher since 2003 and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) since 2004.
