Prestigious event by Law Society
Law Market Day 2010Law firms and organisations from across the country gathered under a marquee on the beautiful St Peter's Lawns on 22 February 2010 for the annual 'Law Market Day'. Hosted by the Faculty of Law, the Careers Centre and the Student Law Society, the Law Market Day gives law students at Rhodes and potential employers to meet in an informal and convivial atmosphere. This year more than 16 law firms and organisations attended. The rainy Grahamstown weather did little to dampen the spirit of attendees and students - with the biggest turnout of both law firms and students to date. The Dean of the Law Faculty, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, the Dean of Students and the Head of the Careers Centre attended all or parts of the day which consisted of a 'walk-around' with lunch (sponsored by Bowman Gilfillan), tea (sponsored by Spoor and Fisher) and a cocktail party (sponsored by Deneys Reitz). A good time was had by all with good networking taking place. In the words of one of the law firms: 'We were exceptionally impressed with the [Rhodes] candidates'. Following the Law Market Day, the Rhodes Student Law Society (in conjunction with the Rhodes Careers Centre) is organising a 'CV Writing/Interview skills' workshop for all law students in March of this year. Law Market Day 2009
Law Careers Week is an effort to introduce and familiarise students (law students in particular) with the various facets of the Law profession such as the work of the public service as well as the work of the legal advisors. During Law Careers Week the Council invites practitioners in the various facets of the profession to come in and address students on the work that they do. A key feature of Law Careers Week is the delivery of a key note speech by a person prominent in his area of expertise, followed by a social cheese and wine function.
