Information Literacy Workshops for Undergraduates
Google Scholar workshops for undergraduates will be offered in the 2nd term in the Library's Xstrata Training Room (Level 2).
Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Google Scholar helps you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research.

RefWorks Workshops are taking place in the Rhodes Library on Wednesdays from 10 April to 12 June
RefWorks is a web-based research management service, similar in function to products such as EndNote, Reference Manager and ProCite.
With RefWorks you can: Organize your information in one convenient place; Generate correctly formatted bibliographies in virtually any style, in seconds; Import references from diverse information sources; Manage all types of source content-not just bibliographic data.

Educate Yourself @ your library
Libraries have always played a role in education, be it a school, academic, public or special library. In the current environment in which we operate, the public library has, for example, largely fulfilled a school library role to fill the gap left by the lack of school libraries. Apart from the “formal” role that libraries play in this arena, they have also always played an informal role in the education of our communities. The concept of lifelong learning is one embodied in all libraries especially public and community libraries. The fact that any person, young or old, rich or poor, employed or unemployed, can walk into a library and find information (in both electronic and traditional formats) to educate and enrich themselves, is one of the major plusses in the favour of libraries.

Online subject encyclopedias/dictionaries for RU staff & students
In additon to several individual encyclopedias (see below), Rhodes Library also subscribes to the Oxford Reference collection of over 125 core academic subject, language, and quotations dictionaries.

Most students (and academics) head for Google Scholar when doing research, and usually find what they want. Because of this, some have questioned why the Library spends money on expensive journals when “they are free on Google Scholar”. WRONG – not free! ...read more
The winners of Rhodes Library LibQUAL+® prizes
At a function held in the library on 26 September 2012, the draw for the winners of the prizes for participating in the LibQUAL+® survey took place. Out of all the Rhodes University Library Users who took part in the survey, 50 names were randomly selected and placed in a container. The names of the lucky winners were then drawn by Dr Peter Clayton (DVC: Research) and Ms Ujala Satgoor (Director: Library Services) in front of an audience of distinguished guests, the lucky finalists and library staff.

Library System Notice
The Library system will be unavailable from 16h00 on Wednesday the 3rd October, for the Library system migration to Sierra (the next generation software upgrade of the currently used Millennium Integrated Library System).
Access to the OPAC and the subscribed e-resources will also be affected by the shutdown.
Loan transactions will be handled manually during the shutdown.
The system is expected to be available again from Thursday morning, 4th October.

New Online Database Evaluation Form
It is now easy for academic staff and students to provide their assessment of the many databases to which the Library runs trials each year. An online evaluation form is available by clicking on 'Evaluate this database' under each trial database listed under 'What is New' and we encourage staff and students to make use of this form. Please seriously consider creating a ResearcherID for yourself.
This free facility from ISI provides an excellent way to list your publications in one place and showcase them (and Rhodes!) to the world. You can add your hyperlinked, unique ResearcherID to your e-mail signature, website, etc., for easy access. ResearcherID also provides an easy way to view your citations and h-index.

Librarians off to the USA!
Vuyo Gontshi, Debbie Martindale and Lucky Mosia-Xaba left on Monday for an exciting ten week study visit to the United States. They will spend the first two weeks at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During the rest of the programme, Vuyo will be hosted by Yale University, Debbie by the University of Washington at St Louis, Missouri, and Lucky by the University of Arizona in Tucson. They will gather in San Francisco for a mid-internship meeting with their mentors, with staff of the Carnegie Corporation of New York (the project funders), and with the Research Libraries Consortium (RLC) Project Director and Manager.

Warren Mayer, a BA1 student, is the lucky winner of the Android Alphapad tablet computer, first prize in our O-week “Amazing Place” competition.
