Rhodes University Library Print Thesis Digitisation Project
Improved discoverability and access are central to the initiative to digitise print theses and in turn support the University’s strategy of: promoting and recognising research activities that enhance international reputation. The digital repository is recognised as a central driver in the research agenda.
Masters and doctoral research students are required to submit a print and electronic copy (compulsory since 2009) of the final version of the thesis or dissertation to the Registrar’s Office. The electronic copy of a thesis is made accessible on the Rhodes eResearch Repository . Theses can also be found via web search engines such as Google. Over 1810 digital theses are currently available. This number, however, represents only one third of the theses produced to date by Rhodes University’s postgraduate students.
The remaining 60% of RU’s student theses, over 3,500 print volumes, are currently digitised and made available online, as part of the Library's expanding digitisation initiative.
The benefits of providing access to research content digitally, to authors, the University and the global academic community are significant:
- Increased visibility, exposure and access to Rhodes University’s research (through searchable descriptions of holdings)
- Enhanced collaboration within the research community
- Secure storage of research output
The Library won’t be contacting individual authors to seek permission to place the digitised theses online, but will immediately remove any thesis should the author request it.
